Hampi is located in the state of Karnataka in India and has been declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Hampi has always intrigued travelers the world over. It is set amidst a beautiful backdrop of boulder-strewn hills and is home to more than 500 monuments.
It is dotted with numerous ruined temple complexes, magnificent palaces and gateways from the Vijayanagara era spread over 26 square kilometers.
Hampi was the medieval capital of the Hindu empire Vijayanagara (the city of victory) from 1343 - 1565 CE. The empire boasted a massive army comprising close to two million men. In around 1500 AD Vijaynagar had about 500,000 inhabitants (supporting 0.1% of the global population during 1440-1540), making it the second largest city in the world after Beijing and almost thrice the size of Paris. It was besieged by the Deccan Muslim 1n 1565 and destroyed and abandoned.
The ruins of Hampi were discovered by Colonel Colin Mackenzie in 1800 CE. This unearthly landscape of giant boulders and splendid remains of temples make it one of the most visited tourist locations in Karnataka both for the rich culture and also a rock climber’s paradise.
